Being that Estavyr is the last bastion of civilization before the savage lands it is only natural for the city to recruit, arm, and maintain a standing army capable of defending the mountain-home. These brave men and women stand vigilant, and do a great service to Estavyr's people by protecting it's borders from wild skirmishers and upholding the law. The Legion as it is commanded now acts as both an army and a city guard. In times of relative peace soldiers retire to their homes to rest and work throughout the day as watchmen and sentries. In times of duress they don their half-plates and march to war. This is how it has been since Estavyr's founding, a policy put in place by the crippled lord Ulrich, one that is still respected to this day. The Legion is a massive organization of various corps groups, some more specialized then others. Some units act as rangers, traveling into the Savage Lands to quell wild threats and chart the lands. Others protect the Ceryn river, an important asset for Estavyr and in the world economy. However, the bulk of the Legion mimics typical town guardsmen in their duties. The 3rd Watchmen Corps is no different with their objectives mostly guard duty and mass patrol.
The 3rd Watchmen Corps is commanded by Saulden Wyrnhoff, an aging veteran due to retire in the next year. The 3rd Watchmen are one of a group of five bulk units stationed around Estavyr, who work day and night through shifts upholding the law and patrolling the streets. Rarely are the Watchmen called upon to leave the city, such work is often lead to the military elite. The Watchmen are far from mediocre, but are still in truth mainly peasants and working class citizens making honest pay. Often referred to as 'Stripes' in the barracks for their unit heraldry, the 3rd Watchmen are famous for dedication and only matched by the 1st Corps in sheer quantity. With a bulk of the unit recently promoted, and drafted to other fields most recruits find themselves put under Saulden's command. In recent times this is where most guards start, and truthfully stay until they are due to retire. If a good day's pay is what you are looking for, the Watch is one of the most honored positions to have in the city. With the pay comes other benefits, respect, honor, and even glory should the mountain call your name to battle.
The Legion is commanded by a staff of veteran officers and generals. Above them the family council and it's adjutants. In truth the Legion has no say in what laws are passed or to be enforced, legislative matters are left to politicians and judges. The Legion just enforces the laws in place, and does so without hesitation. However, The Legion maintains it's own regulations that are put in place by command. These regulations, when broken, are often settled in court with Legion judges and command staff. These incidents rarely ever leave Legion hands and are more often then not settled by guard staff.

Tried-and-True!
Command The most senior of staff, the command division is responsible for anything and everything in his unit. They recruit new members, handle promotions, establish patrol routes, assign schedules, enforce regulation, and everything else in between. These officers are seldom seen in the field, and are often handling paperwork and other ordinances for the state. When work permits it, however, some commanders enjoy spending time on patrol.
Lt. Saulden Wyrnhoff
Senior Staff One cut above the rest, the veteran staff is often left with the tasks and chores Command simply cannot attend to. This often includes leading scheduled patrols, and training sessions, routine inspections, enforcing regulations, and whatever else may be left to them. Senior Staff are often the first to respond to disturbances and are expected to form squads as they are required on the field.
The Watch As your typical guardsmen, The Watch make up most of the unit. They work long shifts as sentries, bodyguards, and patrolmen. The guardsmen have undergone a few weeks of basic training, and continue to partake in exercises as they hone their skills in the field. All Watchmen share the same rank, answer to the same officers, and are bound to the same regulations.

Recruits The lowest rung, Recruits hold no authority and are always expected to answer to their superiors as they undergo training. While The Watch patrols and goes about their daily duties, Recruits are constantly run through exercises and drills as they are trained to be proper guardsmen. They must always be in the company of another guard and cannot enforce the law without one present. In a few weeks time they will be up for evaluation and should they pass they will be promoted to the core Watchmen unit.
Service Staff Not all those who serve do so as guardsmen. Many citizens join the corps as cooks, cleaners, janitors, and quartermasters. These positions are extremely important, pay well enough, and are essential in every barracks. These workers are held to the same regulations Guardsmen adhere to, but are never called upon to serve in the field and are rarely given basic training.
Enlisted soldiers and watchmen are expected to follow standard regulation and don only authorized equipment on the field. More often then not this is always the case, however, in some cases (or between units) some guardsmen may be allotted specialized equipment or varying kits for different situations. For the most part, however, all watchmen are issued the same basic kit and are expected to keep it maintained, clean, and presentable. The only accepted change in uniforms are weapons on hand, with only a basic, double-edged longsword issued by the barracks. This sword is coupled with a sap, and dagger. If one so desires they may bring their own weapon (with a sheath), and it must not be garish in design, and for the most parts modest. Crossbows are handed out to sentries, and men on the ramparts. Wooden shields and bucklers are offered at the backs for guardsmen strained sword-and-board, if not, guards are to wield their longswords hand-and-half at all times. Guardsmen adept in the arcane arts (a very rare case, as most are simply denied) they are not required to wear gauntlets, however helmets are required no matter the inconvenience. The most basic kit is as follows, and is most often employed by patrolling guardsmen, and is best represented by the Watchmen picture reference.
An iron helmet. Often equipped with a visor mask. Variations exist to accommodate varying racial features.
A leather coif.
A black cloak, pinned with corps insignia.
A button-down, yellow tabard. Worn over the Guardsmen's surcoat.
A leather surcoat, worn over chainmail.
A chainmail hauberk, worn under surcoat.
A pair of leather gauntlets. Added plating protects the forearms and wrists.
A leather belt that may be coupled with a bandolier. Both are to be fitted with pouches.
A pair of leather trousers. Padding may be added to the legs.
A pair of leather boots. May be exchanged for mail greaves by request.
A longsword. Double edged, with a cruciform hilt long enough for to be used two handed. Sheathed at the hip.
A dagger, with a sheath for the hip.
A sap (or blackjack), with a sheath for the hip.
An assortment of other guardsmen paraphernalia. Includes, but not limited to, manacles, keys, warrants, medical kits, whetstones, and mute stones.
While rarely issued to Watchmen, some cases call for heavier armor and equipment. These tools are often borrowed from the Legionnaires who are otherwise always stationed on city borders or combating threats in the Savage Lands. When local threats arise, and Watchmen need to be armored and ready for battle at a moment's notice these armors and weapons are lent out to the corps. In these dire situations Guardsmen may find their leather surcoats and huaberks exchanged for half-plate mail suits. These suits are much heavier then they may be accustomed to but provide much, much more armor with their interlocking steel plates. The helmet is always fit with a visor, with mail greaves and gauntlets an absolute must. Issued weapons remain the same, save for the metal shields usually on reserve for active Legionnaires. Is it an essential part of training that Watchmen be ready for the change should Estavyr come under attack and all standing soldiers are expected to take to the front lines.
The first few weeks in the Watchmen corps are spent as a Recruit. These recruits are expected to wear a different garb entirely as they are trained. Rarely are these recruits forced into anything more then simple sentry duty (with a few days spent scrubbing down latrines) and their armor often reflects that. The chainmail huaberks are replaced with quilted surcoats, thick, padded armors that rival leather with their protection. Every and all plated mail is absent save for the metal gauntlets recruits are trained to wear. The longsword is sacrificed in favor for the shortsword, a much easier blade to wield when coupled with the long shafted spears recruits often carry on sentry duty. All of this may change however during training exercises where recruits are growing familiar with arms and armor they will be wearing as on-roster Watchmen.
3rd Watchmen Corps:
Guard regulation runs paralel with Estavyr's standard laws in almost every way. The only real difference between the two being that guards are often punished much more severely for their crimes, as they are expected to be upholding them. What may be considered a simple crime for a commoner may be trialed treason in the legion. An excerpt of some rules follows.
You are a law-abiding citizen first, and a guardsmen second. Respect the law.
Citizens are to be treated with utmost respect at all times.
The accused will always be trialed. These are our basic rights.
You will follow your superior's orders first, above all else. You will never question command.
Arcane arts are not to be used on duty for any means unless authorized by command.
Your arms and armor will always be sharpened and polished. You must look the part to be the part.
You will act. When called upon by citizen or superior alike, you will answer the call to duty.
You will see to any reports, and every investigation (no matter the case) is to be taken as seriously as the next.
Warrants must be issued before searching private properties. These warrants may be issued by any senior staff member with reasonable suspicions.
Drinking on the job is prohibited.
The abuse of mana, or any related paraphernali is extremely prohibited.
Only Legion staff are permitted into the barracks. Others are to be expelled unless authorized by command.
No guardsmen will engage in relations with another guardsmen. Violators are to be transferred immediately.
More often then not Watchmen are allowed one or two strikes before their job is on the line. Floggings and suspensions are the most common punishments handed out by command, with only repeat offenders trialed for treason (and subsequently hung). Unless the accused are guilty with crimes more severe then these, in which case they will be trialed as explained in Estavyr's laws.

I'd like to think that the population of guards that our players will be representing will be the standard rank and file, to avoid preferential treatment to certain characters, and also handling said 'rangers' and other units that venture outside the city should be left to NPCs to better dictate their skills to the players and aid as tools for RP. But that's just my idea. I prefer our players being the good old town guards.

That's exactly what they are. I wanted the players to be one unit of many, as Estavyr is a large bustling city having just a handful of players represent what is to be an entire army would be poorly representative. As it stands now players will only be in the 3rd Watchmen who are your everyday typical guardsmen, and I have no plans for rangers or actual standing soldiers yet. These things may be open for players in the future if events and the like permit it but it simply doesn't make sense that players would be playing soldiers when they aren't needed. I also wanted to leave room for NPC guardsmen that are from other units or sections, which may open up more RP for the unit as they interact with other formations that aren't their own.

Alright, pretty big update.
Applications are open. If you want to have a guardsmen character BEFORE the server officially opens now is your chance. I urge anyone interested to take a dive and apply. Once the server is open I'll be removing applications entirely and you will have to apply IC. We have some positions to fill, and remember, you don't need to be a guardsmen to join. There is plenty of room for other much more passive characters to exist as well. Just PM me your application and I'll respond as quickly as I can.

Updated. Applications removed and a few recruits have been added. Another recruit is supposed to be on the roster as well but I unfortunately forgot his name, and I apologize, but I'll add you as soon as we're together on server again. I left in a hurry as I got really sick last night so I apologize.
If everyone gets on later today we'll start training. I ask that you guys don't change your names or masquerade around as guardsmen yet until we go through that RP together. You'll get your uniforms and what-not then and after that you won't need me to be on-server to jump on.
