Wargs Warg_zps100834bb

Wargs are a scourge of the southern lands, preying on those who would venture forth.
Quote :
Wargs are easily described as wolf-like creatures that in their adulthood stand comfortably larger than horses. They wear thick, matted fur in a number of dust and blood soaked colours, ranging from auburn, black, white and all in between, and often blend in seamlessly with the tall grass they stalk. Their bodies are muscled and powerful, built to maintain speeds impressive for their bulk, and their jaws bear rows of sharp teeth able to pierce and crush even the hardiest of plate armour. A tough hide and thick skin grants them endurance not only in their ability to survive but during combat with its various natural predators and the blades of adventurers, as do claws intended to cut and rip the flesh of downed prey.

Wargs are found only on the western continent, and primarily in the wilds of the Savage Lands. They are as feral and vicious as the lands they take shelter within, able to kill without a moment's hesitation if provoked and all too easily angered. They are often hunted by brave hunters and adventurers in order to take their large teeth as trophies, or quelled when wargs settle on the paths leading outwards from the more civilised lands and prevent passage into the south.

Once a scourge throughout the world, their numbers have dropped considerably outside of the Savage Lands enough that they can only be found admist the chilling cold air of Ostia. Winter wargs, or silver wargs as they have come to be known, take shelter at the base of the Aryns and the Aubers where the last of their kind prey on the small villages situated there. They are heavily hunted primarily due to the threat they pose to Ostians and their livestock both, though their thick hide has for centuries seen usage in traditional craft. These wargs lack the size of their southern cousins, likely due to their reduced food sources, standing just below the height of a horse and almost always bearing knotted silver fur. They are predicted to become extinct within fifty years, though they remain a fierce threat away from the larger cities.

Regardless, the Ostian night still brings the howl of the warg, a chilling cry that can be heard coming from the mountains as packs of the creatures venture out to find food. Many Ostian hunters have lost their lives to silver wargs despite their dangerously low population, the task of hunting them too often a fatal pursuit for the uninitiated, and with the pups being the size of dogs even the young are hunted with care.
